How to Care for a Leather Wallet: A Step-by-Step Guide

A good quality leather product becomes prettier as time goes by — but only if it’s cared for properly. Full-grain and veg-tanned leather, like the kind used in every EXTORA wallet, develops a rich patina over years of use. These steps will help yours get there.

Why Does Leather Need Special Care?

Leather is a natural material that contains oils and fibres. Without care, it dries out, stiffens, and cracks. With proper care, leather ages gracefully and stays supple — developing a character that no synthetic material can replicate.

How to Care for Your Leather Wallet — Step by Step

Step 1: Empty and Dust the Wallet First

Remove all cash, cards, and contents from the wallet. Then use a dry microfibre cloth to brush away loose dirt or dust from all surfaces, seams, and crevices. This removes grit before any moisture touches the leather — rubbing dust into leather causes micro-scratches that dull the finish over time.

Step 2: Wipe Gently with a Barely Damp Cloth

Slightly moisten a clean cloth — it should feel barely damp, not wet — and wipe it gently across all surfaces. Doing this weekly removes the oils and residues that dull the leather’s finish. For veg-tanned leather, avoid soaking: excessive water can leave tide marks and temporarily stiffen the hide.

Step 3: Spot Clean Stains Carefully

For stains such as ink or grease, dab the spot with a cloth lightly dampened in a dedicated leather cleaner or a mild soap solution. Blot — never rub — and repeat if needed. Always test any cleaner on a small hidden patch first to avoid altering the colour or finish. For tough stains, seek a professional leather cleaning service.

Step 4: Air-Dry Naturally — Never Use Heat

If the leather gets wet, blot up the moisture immediately with a dry cloth and leave the wallet to air-dry naturally in a well-ventilated room. Never place it near a heater, radiator, or under direct sunlight. Heat permanently damages leather fibres — causing irreversible cracking even in premium full-grain hides.

Step 5: Condition the Leather Every 5–6 Months

Conditioning moistens the leather fibres and keeps the wallet supple. Choose a high-quality leather cream or balm made specifically for natural leather — avoid furniture polish or household cleaners. Apply a small amount to a clean cloth, buff it into the leather with circular motions, and wipe off any residue. Don’t overapply — excess conditioner can darken the leather unevenly.

Step 6: Test Conditioner on a Hidden Patch First

Before applying conditioner to the full wallet, test it on a hidden area such as the inside flap. If the colour changes noticeably or the leather feels greasy after 24 hours, try a different conditioner. This single step prevents permanent discolouration on the visible surfaces of your wallet.

Step 7: Protect from Moisture Before the Rainy Season

Apply a leather weather-repellent spray before first use and at the start of each monsoon season. Hold the spray 20–25 cm away and apply in even, sweeping passes. Allow it to dry fully before use. This gives the leather a fighting chance against splashes, humidity, and everyday sweat.

Step 8: Store Correctly in a Dust Bag

When not in use, store the wallet in a cool, dry, and ventilated area — never in a plastic bag. Use a cotton dust bag or wrap it in a soft cloth. To prevent wrinkles during long-term storage, lightly stuff the wallet with tissue paper to maintain its shape. Keep it away from direct sunlight and heat vents.

Step 9: Use It Often to Build Patina

Regular daily handling is exactly what builds patina. Every time you touch, bend, and use your wallet, the leather softens and develops its unique glow. A leather wallet that is regularly used will always look better than one kept in a drawer. If you own multiple leather accessories, rotate between them to prevent uneven wear on any single piece.

Embracing Patina — The Beauty of Natural Ageing

Good leather is meant to change. Patina is the mellow darkening and softening you see on leather over time — the warm, lived-in look that adds real character. Avoid high-shine or silicone-based polishes on full-grain leather as they mask this process. Accept minor scratches and colour variations — they tell a story. Only real top-quality leather develops a lasting patina. Imitation leathers simply crack.
